Welcome to the press page for Terraform: Monster Taming Game.
Terraform is a new, retro-style, monster taming RPG inspired by games from the Game Boy Color era.
This game is in the middle of a kickstarter that will end on November 29th at 10:00 AM PT. I hope you will consider writing about it and help this kickstarter become successful.
Terraform is a single-player story-based experience played entirely in browser with nothing to download or install, not even a browser plugin! Terraform will run on any computer with an up-to-date browser. Playing Terraform is completely free for everyone, and has a playable demo available now.
Story
On a distant planet far from Earth, intelligent animals created their own societies, and lived in relative harmony. That is, until a hoard of vicious alien monsters invaded their home. When more aliens, called "humans", came to explore their planet, they realized they may be able to help each other. Only together can they save their world.
You play a teenager that is not very excited about being forced to join the "Companion Program", an organization meant to be a cooperative union between animals and humans. The goal of the program is to protect and serve citizens of this strange planet, specifically against the threat of the "Grey". This game is about making grown-up decisions, and that not everything is what it seems.
Development
The planet is based off a real planet called Kepler 452-b (also known as Earth's cousin). We wanted to explore the idea that what if humans went to this planet, and found that talking animals were the dominant species? What would these animals think of us?
We also wanted to play with the idea of taking this Game Boy style and pushing the boundaries, in more ways than one. The game seems typical for the era at first, but in the first few minutes you realize both the art and the story deviate from it's inspirations. For example, the enemies in the game (the "Grey") were designed to look like they came from a completely different game, as if they were intruding upon the story. Also unlike games from the time, the player is not considered a hero but is treated like a punk and is disliked by many of the NPCs.
Gameplay
The gameplay is turn-based with teams of up to three on each side. The animals all have classes that give them either an advantage or disadvantage in battle, and the main strategy is navigating which ones to have on the field together. Dissimilar to most monster taming games, you do not catch animals but instead persuade them to join your party. The higher the level, the more turns it will take to convince them. There is also a weapons and armor system, and some pet simulator features.
